HistoMap is intended to make specialist heritage data more accessible so that people are able to learn more about historical sites and places. Our purpose is to empower people to engage directly with archaeology and the historic environment.
Each app is a bespoke, handmade and accurate summary of historical data for specific places. The information we present is the result of careful scholarly research by experts in archaeology, historic buildings and heritage landscapes. We use data which is in the public domain, highlighting key facts and points of interest for the widest possible audience.
Each place contains a database of between 250 and 300 sites, which together comprise between 300-400 separate listed buildings, scheduled monuments and other heritage sites. This data is supported by over 200 academic and scholarly references, all of which can be accessed through the app. We also provide some links to relevant information from local authorities, Historic England and local museums and other heritage attractions.
Our database is compiled entirely by professional heritage experts with over 30 years experience. Each entry in the database is created by bringing together information from various sources, including the local or regional Historic Environment Record (HER), Historic England records, published peer-reviewed academic articles, and professional and academic papers. We are very selective about our sources, preferring to use information that has been verified by heritage professionals rather than unreferenced works of local history.
We do not use AI to create our databases, and we do not ‘scrape’ data — all entries are compiled manually and checked by real humans.
At the moment our efforts are focussed on enhancing the visitor experience for local places in beautiful Shropshire. We hope to be able to expand the app to cover more areas in due course.
Please keep an eye out here for developments, or get in touch.
